About Our Concrete
Grey Matter delivers concrete technology to artisans that have been industry secrets for far too long! Cast incredible objects in small batches on a DIY budget.
Concrete Cat had a problem.
"We want to make more than sidewalks. We need a concrete mix that can make art." - Concrete Cat
Grey Matter was originally developed exclusively for Concrete Cat. It's a special mix designed to meet the rigours of fabricating sculpture, furniture, and architectural details. Concrete Cat and Concrete Concrete came together with the support of the Canadian National Research Council to design the perfect concrete for artists and designers.
Concrete Cat's Story
"When Concrete Cat began experimenting in 2007 the only mix available was for sidewalks; it was clumsy, crusty and slow! After years of struggling they discovered that the largest concrete company in the world had a proprietary mix that would perfectly suit their needs. Unfortunately the minimum order was 20X more than Concrete Cat used in a year and it was coupled with an unattainable annual licensing fee.
A year later Concrete Cat met a reclusive concrete chemist who helped them make magic. With this new found expert on board they partnered the Canadian National Research Council in an 18 month research project to design a concrete mix from the ground up. We created a mix designed to make highly detailed art with no need for special equipment. To date Concrete Cat has used over 20 tonnes of Grey Matter, it’s the best concrete in the world and our work wouldn’t be the same without it!

Why:
Demold project in 12hr rather than days. This alone is a game changer when you're working with limited space and molds.
Strength in the tiniest of details. High strength gives the finest detail longevity. Most concrete mixes can catch some fine detail but only a high performance mix can maintain that detail over the years, everything else crumbles to dust.
Grey Matter releases air bubbles with infinitely less vibration than standard mixes, this means most molds can be vibrated just with your hands. Less equipment saves you money.
Minimal filler, the bare minimum amount of sand and gravel is in Grey Matter. We do this because our main focus is creating high quality, highly detailed small objects. If you’re casting larger objects you have the option of adding more sand and gravel to give your mix more volume. We leave this choice to you.
Grey Matter is rigorously tested for 2 things.
One is strength, our batching facility does a 12hr, 24hr, 7 days and 28 day strength test.
Second is colour consistency. We source the same colour sand, gravel and blend of cement for every batch mix and test each new mix with our base pigments.
